In your light, we see …

You are the light of the world. (Matthew 5:14)

She has no idea how I see her. Kneeling beside her mother, she turns to catch my eye, watching me pray as I watch her pray. Once, twice, she turns again to look, her dark eyes awakening tears in my own. She has no idea the light of beauty I see in her simple act of kneeling to pray.

She shines like the sun and has no idea how wonderful she is, or shall I say the wonder, the light that is there, already in her?

But she is not alone. This is a day of wonders. Two boys hold each other’s hand as they walk forward to commune. After receiving, the older, all of seven, I suppose, puts his arm around the younger lest he lose his way.

Holding the host, the deacon looks me in the eye and says, ‘The body of Christ,’ as the congregation sings, ‘Taste and see, taste and see.’

Yes, Lord, I see and in seeing taste my own tears telling of a goodness that shines in the light of faith and grace, the beauty of holiness all around me, and again, as the Latina who greeted me receives the bread of life, then bows deeply to the table of the Lord.

All of them filled with the light of grace and faith and love, which is to say you, Lord Jesus. And I, for a few moments am granted the grace of seeing them through your eyes, for the light I see, blessedly, dwells also in me.

If there’s a greater grace, I know not of it.
