Ephesians 2: 19-22
So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are
citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon
the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the
cornerstone. In him the whole structure is
joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are
built together spiritually into a
dwelling-place for God.
The household of my
love
We ache to belong, Holy One. We long to be gathered into a love
that heals our broken hearts and stills every fear about our worthiness. Loneliness
endures until we are joined in a unity of peace where we need not fear each
other, where all are welcome and no is a stranger or alien.
But we cannot create such a community. Our differences stir
insecurity so we draw lines and build walls to excludethose whose ways
and ideas threaten our own.
Political and moral convictions divide us into competing
camps. Cock-sure self-righteousness hardens hearts and blocks simple understanding--let
alone love-- from flowing beyond the narrow confines of “my people, my party,
my ideological soul mates.”
Every time our differences create strangers and aliens Christ
suffers assault. For he is building a holy temple, a common household, where
all are welcome, all belong and human differences are joined in loving union.
“Surrender your fears of each other,” he says. “Drop the
self-righteousness that hides your uncertainty. Cease pretending that you are
something more or less, stronger or weaker than others. It is not true.”
“Trust and know that you are loved, that your home is in me.
You will find freedom to share the joys and suffering, the beauty and wisdom of
other human souls in the household of my love.”
Prayer
Wash away our hurts and hatreds, our fear and mistrust.
Build the household of your love among us where all may abide.
